SCS On The Road: Gamescom 2018

The biggest European gaming event is coming! We'll be there for you for the whole duration of Gamescom 2018, from 21st to 25th of August, 2018.

Last year's Gamescom was our first experience in the role of an exhibitor. We were happy to see long queues lining up to experience our sim rigs, even though we had our SCS Sim Trailer placed out in the scorching sun. (Take a throwback-look at a short report of Gamescom 2017)

We have decided to move our show under the roof, to a more visible location that would be more comfortable for our visitors and fans. We've partnered with our friends - German distributors of our truck sims Astragon Entertainment GmbH - to build a combined expo booth showing our trucks sims next to their catalog of games. Of course, we will be there in full force - a real truck with our SCS Sim Trailer attached. You will find us in the center of Hall 8.

We plan to show new stuff coming to both American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2, so if you make it to Cologne, you can look forward to driving on some of the all-new roads. ;)

We would also like to invite press and all creators who make videos, stream, write reviews or publish articles dedicated to sim and driving games - we'll be happy to welcome you at our VIP meeting point!

ETS2 Special Transport revisited

Last December's add-on release for Euro Truck Simulator 2 - the Special Transport DLC - has been accepted very positively in the fan community. As you may remember, a comparable game expansion is also in the works for American Truck Simulator, but meanwhile, the team behind Special Transport still keeps on tweaking and improving their creation.

We are happy to reveal that along with the upcoming ETS2 1.31 Update, the Special Transport DLC will also be updated with new jobs. There are new routes added to the core map, and several new routes will also be accessible for owners of other map DLCs.

This is not our last take on Special Transport, you can count on further tweaks and improvements down the road!

Warming up for ATS: Special Transport

We have received a lot of positive feedback to our recently-released ETS2 Special Transport DLC. We continue to work on it - more routes are coming as well as various subtle code improvements. Meanwhile, we are bombarded with questions about a comparable expansion for American Truck Simulator, and we feel that we should not keep you completely in the dark. We are happy to confirm that ATS will also receive its own oversize loads!

Our vehicle team is currently building a bunch of new massive cargoes for ATS, so the route designers have to use placeholders for now. When the creators are setting up the route parameters, a ton of testing and iterating is required to make sure that the given cargo can get from point A to point B smoothly but with just the right level of challenge for the players. This is very time consuming, so we had better start on "scripting" the routes before the final cargo models are available. Let's take a look at a couple of screenshots below...

You can see our special cargo placeholder trailer. Our designers use it to verify that a particular cargo we have in our plans will eventually fit through critical places of the in-game world. If it doesn't fit, usually we try to tweak the map, perhaps raise a bridge by a feet or two, or move a big rock a bit further from a tight bend on the road. If such a change would ruin the place, we have to find and set up an alternate route. As you can see, some places are rather tight, with only a few inches of space left to drive thru!

Our Special Transport development team is spending a lot of time pulling this placeholder trailer, and as a joke they've started to call this weird empty box "the aquarium". When the vehicle team heard about it, they've decided to elaborate on this little joke. So now, when we're looking for suitable routes, we're also taking the SCS Hammerhead shark for a nice ride. :-)

On Wednesday, we have offered the players of Euro Truck Simulator 2 a new challenge with the release of Special Transport DLC. We wanted to bring you something fresh, something different from the monotony of standard deliveries. Some of the tight passes should put your skills to a real test, and the escort vehicles make it all look really exciting.

Reading your excited and positive reactions, comments, and reviews on the various communication and social channels, it looks like we have succeeded in our goal, and made our fan base mostly happy.

Special Transport is waiting!

We are proud to bring you the final major release of 2017 - Special Transport DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2 is now available for everyone on Steam Store!

Important: If you are a long-term fan with a larger portfolio of ETS2 expansions but little patience to read the following wall of text, make sure to check out this Cargo Bundle link first!

It has been a very busy year for SCS Software, a year of major studio growth, and also a year with the record amount of content releases in our plans. We were planning to space out the releases through the autumn, but you know us, we don't release stuff until it's done. So we kept coming back to tweak, test, polish, re-test - rinse and repeat - until we are finally satisfied with the quality. We ended up with several releases all lined up for the final weeks of the year, we apologize for the avalanche.

This expansion is quite special for us and not only for its name. It's not just about a bunch of new highly detailed 3D models - as the regulations of oversize transports are very specific, we had to develop a ton of new AI code and created a sort of a game inside a game.

These jobs just don't allow you the same degree of freedom to roam the continent as standard deliveries, quite the contrary, you have to adhere to very strict instructions, keep your hand steady on the steering wheel and your eyes on every centimeter of the road. We have spent over a year coding and scripting the functionality and the first batch of Special Transport jobs for the release, but it's only a start, we are committed to bringing you a wider variety of routes in the future.

Your route will be secured by two escort vehicles guiding you through the transport job from its start to the place of delivery. It's not going to be a piece of cake, but if you obey the escort vehicles' advice and deliver the cargo in pristine condition, you can consider yourself a real pro, a true veteran behind the wheel who can deliver even the most enormous cargoes.
