SCS On The Road: Slovakiaring

In a couple of days, our SCS On the Road crew will pack again and set the compass to a new destination - the Slovakiaring - for the 4th round of the FIA ETRC truck racing championship. We can't wait to meet with all our local fans there. See you all in the Fan Village, just like usual!

Let us whet your appetite with a short photo report from the previous race at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany. It was a very busy long weekend for our team there. Three days full of trucking, with crowds of people interested in our games. We met a lot of fantastic fans and we'd like to say thank you to all who had come to visit us.

Our motion seat rigs are proving so attractive that Krone Trailers wanted an extra motion seat for their booth at Nürburgring, playing a custom version of our game with an advanced look at their trailers included. It was a pilot project, but we really like the idea that in the future the manufacturers of trucks and equipment would be keen to use our games as a demo platform for their products at public events. It would definitely raise the awareness and profile of our games even higher.

We had a really cordial meeting with Jessica Lynn and her band. Stay tuned as more info about our future cooperation is coming. It was a hectic weekend but we loved every single second of each one of those days!

Make sure to follow our live feed about what's happening at SCS Sim Trailer on our Twitter and Instagram profiles.

SCS On The Road: ETRC Misano 2018+A World of Trucks Event!

The SCS Sim Trailer and crew are getting ready for the first round of FIA European Truck Racing Championship 2018. Mighty roars of the racing trucks will sound at the famous Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in Italy from 26th to 27th of May. And we'll be there!

Becoming a part of the roadshow for the 2017 season of the championship was the first experience of such kind for us, but it has proved to be a great opportunity to meet with our fans as well as to introduce our truck sim games to new audiences. We have fallen in love with the unique feeling of such events, the massive crowds, and all the diesel beauties and mighty trucks.

Let's give in to a bit of nostalgia with a short flashback of FIA ETRC 2017 events as seen through our eyes, and a teaser of new things to come!

Out first stop will be in Misano, May 26-27. As always, if you plan to stop by, you can look forward to meeting our crew, trying our motion rigs, and perhaps even getting answers to some tough questions. ;)

To celebrate the start of the FIA ETRC 2018 season and our participation on the travelling circus accompanying the race series on eight circuits in eight countries, today we are launching a new cool World of Trucks event!

As you can see in the image below, we did our homework through the winter months, including inviting the iconic Pace Pete to visit SCS Software's office for a little chitchat.

Truck racing motorsport is attracting huge crowds around Europe, with over 400k visitors showing up to see the races during a season. The racing teams need to be very organized and well supplied to last through the season. All in all, a huge amount of various goods and parts must be moved all around the continent for the events to happen! And now you can lend your helping hand, too, at least virtually, by participating in the new event. To celebrate in proper shape, we have added a special trailer to the game for the duration of the event, sporting the marks of the main sponsors and organizers of 2018 FIA ETRC races: Krone Trailers, Goodyear, and FIA ETRC.

If you'd like to participate in the event, please read carefully the detailed info listed below. Everyone who will succeed and pass the event rules will be rewarded with five in-game items in the motifs of racing or decorated with the colors and logos of the main sponsors of this year's championship.

"Start your engines" Event Rules

Deliver Racing Components (special trailer picture above) to at least 12 different cities. Only deliveries over 200km are eligible.

Rewards

  • Paint Job with a racing motif - "Slipstream"
  • Cabin accessory/toy - "Pace Pete Bobblehead"
  • ETRC Window Pennant
  • Goodyear Window Pennant
  • KRONE Window Pennant

And that's not all! At the conclusion of the event, we'll randomly pick two lucky participants who will each get a very special reward - two tickets of their choice to any one of the upcoming rounds of the FIA ETRC 2018 season. Plus a bit of merch, with ETS2/ATS and ETRC cap as a bonus.

As you probably remember from the previous events, we are taking advantage of Steam's Inventory infrastructure to "drop" the rewards to you. As a consequence, the individual items can be traded or even sold through Steam. Just remember that if you get rid of a particular Inventory item, you will no longer be able to see it in the game's Upgrade Shop and equip your truck with it.

This event will last until the 17th of June, 2018. Have fun, and see you at the races!

KRONE trailers coming to Euro Truck Simulator 2

If you follow our social media channels, you must have noticed that we have posted a couple of photos from our visit to KRONE manufacturing plant back in November of last year. It wasn't just a regular visit, as it involved a lot of photography over a period of two days - to make sure we get high-quality 3D scans of several of the trailers there. The fan response was very positive, of course, a new official license for our games is always welcome.

We are happy to confirm that the negotiations have been successfully concluded and that we have shaken hands on bringing a selection of KRONE trailers as a new DLC to Euro Truck Simulator 2!

While our crew was taking pictures of the various trailers, KRONE's marketing team took the opportunity to interview our guys and document their work. This short documentary was just released to KRONE's YouTube channel today, and we are happy to bring it our fans as well...

It is really exciting when the licensing partners take our work so seriously and recognize the opportunity to raise the visibility of their brand through our cooperation! This is definitely not the last bit of news on this topic so you may consider checking out KRONE's TwitterInstagram, and Facebook profiles from time to time, or simply show them a bit of your appreciation for being ready to join the ETS2 universe. The power and engagement of our fan community is a strong factor when we approach tentative licensing partners.

We have no ETA to announce yet for the new DLC, but our vehicle art team is already on the job, doing their best to raise the quality bar once again. Together with our programmers and designers, they are working on some really cool stuff related to trailers in gameplay. ;-)

Under The Hood: US Traffic Signs

Welcome back to the fourth article of the 'Under the Hood' series. Today, we're going to take a look at the traffic signs in our games, specifically focusing on American Truck Simulator development.

As our experience and our team size are growing, we can afford to dedicate more attention and development time to various aspects of our game world. Traffic signs are no exception. During the early years of development, with a relatively small development team, we had to take a lot of shortcuts and simplifications to finish the project in a reasonable time. Looking back, we now realize that our first take at the arrangement of traffic signs as used in our rendition of California and Nevada left much to be desired. From our perspective of a developer based in Europe, we thought it was believable, when in fact we have unknowingly omitted quite important building blocks of the whole logical system.

We have focused a lot more on research in the past year, and managed to dedicate enough manpower to road signs. Especially for drivers with actual experience from US roads, this is going to be very noticeable in New Mexico

It's not just about the look of individual signs, their shape, dimensions, color, numbering, or proper font choice - these are non-negotiable of course. We now have a very flexible toolset at our disposal to compose a sign from its elements. We can also choose specific details that are particular to a given state or region, like different poles. But ultimately, it's about the whole system.

New Mexico DLC marks the start of a new era, taking advantage of the new set of traffic sign building blocks. The new set is also used when building the next ATS world region, which is already very much under development.

For future game updates, we have a plan in place and capacity reserved to also revisit the "older" states of American Truck Simulator, to make the signs more accurate. So you can look forward to further improvements in California, Nevada, and Arizona.

As you can see in the images, our asset designers have created a new set consisting of about 200 new traffic signs. Our programmers have come up with a new system, allowing the map designers to use and combine the base and info part of the traffic signs from a wide variety of options. This efficient new system will be useful for example for traffic sign poles made out of wood instead of the more typically used metal.

Only overhead traffic signs on our highways? Not anymore, because we've also created several new types of traffic sign placement. There will be signs placed on highway bridges you're just passing under, affixed to sound barriers placed alongside the road, and so on, just like in real life. We are doing some tweaks and upgrades to the standard overhead signs. We can now appreciate even small details like the difference between the placement and style of how the exit number is positioned. With all these upgrades we're trying to cover as many specifications per state as possible.

You can also look forward to meeting some diagram traffic signs, showing a schematic drawing of the upcoming intersection. We can also work better with "control cities" on highway signs. Eventually, even though for sign placements we are somewhat limited by the 1:20 scale of our world compared to reality, our ambition is to have 100% realistic road signs in American Truck Simulator.

Please let us know your opinions, wishes and suggestions, or which topic should we cover next our 'Under The Hood' series articles.

BIG Announcement

Today, we'd like to provide you with a quite detailed look at a project that has been underway for well over a year - our upcoming Special Transport DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2.

We have hinted at its existence in last year's New Year Wishes video, at that point we actually thought that we would be ready to release it in only a few months. Obviously, the project needed more time to mature. So we kept on working; you may have noticed that a few months ago a screenshot was revealed in a report from Gamescom 2017 private presentation. Recently several curious visitors were allowed to try it at Warsaw Games Week 2017 and then we've allowed local TV to come to try and record it as a little teaser.

Ultimately, a cross-disciplinary team has poured an incredible amount of time into this project, and today we are finally revealing it in full glory.

But first, a photo...

Some time ago, a couple of our colleagues were invited to become a part of a convoy for oversized transport of a huge metal tank to the city of Mělník, Czech Republic. This rare two-day experience had one goal - to gather as much data and info as possible about the whole transport and how things like this are done. Why? Because we know that our community is obsessed with realism and authenticity, you guys are always pushing us to make things more real, and want to avoid making big and unnecessary mistakes. A lot our fans are very vocal about getting something new and more challenging to test your skills. We felt that it's time to try and satisfy some of this hunger!

A lot of time has passed, and now as you can see in the video below, we are testing one of these Special Transport jobs on our motion seat in the office. What's going on there? It's quite big, right? And what are those cars with flashing beacons? Are they perhaps escort vehicles?

Yes, they are. Yes, the cargo is big, it's huge. And yes, the escort vehicles can affect the traffic. There will be two of these, one escorting the player in front of him/her and one in the back. Their purpose is clear, to assist the driver to get the cargo from the start to the finish line of each special transport job. But that's not all.

Let's review what this DLC is all about:

  • 11 New Special Cargoes (up to 70 tons, 6 m width, 5+ m height and 20+ m length)
  • 4 New Trailers
  • 17 Unique Routes with the Special Transport Jobs (12 Base Map, 2 Scandinavia, 2 Going East!, 1 Vive la France !). This list will grow over time.
  • A combination of over 80 Special Transport Jobs
  • Escort Vehicles with a custom AI like clearing the path, stopping traffic, giving advice, pushing opposing vehicles to the side etc.
  • Special intros and cutscenes related to the cargoes, missions or places along the routes
  • New Models, characters, and animations of people around the scene
  • Pedestrians, journalists or transport co-workers along the routes recognizing day, night or bad weather
  • Possibility to Fail the "Mission" if you do not adhere to strict regulations
  • New Checkpoints System to keep your progress in a special transport job safe
  • New Warning Beacons Animations
  • New Achievements
  • Higher XP and Money Profit for successful completion of this type of jobs

There is more, but we think that's enough for now. Better do some preparing, because this is going to be the biggest challenge for you and your mighty diesel beast so far!

We are not yet ready to promise a particular release date, but the wait should not be too long anymore. We are super busy finalizing, bug-testing, and releasing a lot of stuff that we want to get into your hands before the end of the year, but we hope that you will have a chance to deliver Special Cargo in Euro Truck Simulator 2 still this side of Christmas.

A TV Show Visit

A few days ago, we were visited by a crew from Czech TV Show "DVA3" - they looked genuinely interested in taking a look at what we are working on.

We decided to show them a glimpse of an internal project that has been underway for well over a year. Fortunately, it looks like we will soon get this work into shape for release (no release date announcement yet though, you know that we only release stuff "when it's done"). Anyway, the project looks very promising now, and we are happy to start showing it to our fans, as some of the curious visitors of Warsaw Games Week last week could confirm.

The DVA3 show also has a YouTube channel to complement the TV show, so we can share the video from their visit to the new SCS Software office with you. It's in Czech language, but they were quite forthcoming to add English subtitles.

So here it is, a work-in-progress peek at our upcoming "Special Transport" DLC for Euro Truck Simulator 2. Stay tuned, because more info about it will come soon.

And a message for the DVA3 team - thank you for your visit and the time you've spent with us, good luck with your show, and we hope to see you again soon!

SCS On The Road: FIA ETRC Le Mans

The FIA European Truck Racing Championship is approaching the finish line and with it also our participation in this season. There are only two rounds left, one at the famous Le Mans in France and the very last battle will happen at the Circuito del Jarama in Spain.

Our small 'On The Road' crew and our Sim Trailer will be present at both of these events, so if you're going to visit any of them, make sure you won't miss our place in the Fan Village. Come and check out our new and unique Sim Trailer, take a photo with our team, and try our high-tech 4D motion seats. We have arrived in Le Mans today, and our crew is really looking forward to meeting with our games' fans!

Let's wrap up this post with a few photos from our travel diary - these are pictures from the previous race event at Circuit Zolder, Belgium.

SCS On The Road: Warsaw Games Week Invitation

Our plan to visit major gaming expos around Europe with our sim trailer started with Gamescom 2017, but that's not all that we have in this year's calendar. The next major games show in our sights is the famous Warsaw Games Week, held in the capital of Poland, the homeland of a huge number of fans of our games.

With kind help from our long-term licensing partner IMGN.PRO, we have arranged to bring our simulation trailer to WGW. It's going to be tight, as the preceding weekend the trailer and the crew are supposed to be in Spain, the place of the final race of the FIA ETRC circuit at Jarama, some 2,800 kilometers away. But we are sure we'll manage the journey safely and in time.

The event will be held at WARSAW EXPO XXI from 13th to 15th of October. Our crew is ready to show you stuff we haven't shown publicly before. Prepare to see (and drive through!) the upcoming map expansions for both American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2, get fresh info about our current progress, future projects, new features, chat with our team, try our motion seats, take a picture with us, or maybe even grab a piece of our exclusive merchandise!

And that's not all because our development team is putting finishing touches on one really BIG and special surprise which will be announced soon. We'd like to show it to the visitors for the first time right at the Warsaw Games Week!

SCS On the Road: ETRC Zolder

This year's FIA European Truck Racing Championship season is approaching the finish line. There are only three rounds left and the next one is at Circuit Zolder, Belgia, September 16-17. None of our SCS 'On the Road' crew has ever been to this place before, so we're all excited to meet with our fans in Belgium for the first time.

Being there for our fans is not the only reason why we're participating in all these events. With every trip, we are also trying to network and create new opportunities by talking to people from the transportation industry. We already feel that some of the dialogs that we have started in recent months may come to fruition and bring us all new exciting content to appear in our games, so keep your fingers crossed for us.

Those who keep an eye on our social media channels like Twitter and Instagram surely know that we'll be posting live from our booth at Zolder just as we're doing from any other public event. (The photos in this post are from our previous trip to the most recent truck race at Most Autodrom.)

If you're planning to visit Zolder this weekend, make a 'visit the SCS Sim Trailer' note in your calendar and come to spend some time with us there. You can look forward to trying our 4D motion seats, having a chat or photo with our crew, getting fresh info about our projects or future plans (but you need to ask in the right way because members of our crew are highly trained at keeping secrets!) or maybe even getting your hands on some of our exclusive merchandise as a gift.

Also, there will be many other cool things to experience during this race event. Roaring powerful beasts in a rough and tough race, amazing paints and trucks, it's a truckers' event that we're talking about! And we all love things like this. :)

Thank you all and see you at Circuit Zolder!
